Custom brokers are licensed individuals or companies that clear US Customs for imported merchandise from any part the world at US ports of entry. They act as representatives of the importer to fulfill all legal obligations before the merchandise is released to the importer.
These individuals can also act as consultants for interpreting the US tariff codes and merchandise classification which can greatly reduce tariff amounts when importing merchandise. I.e., the quality of buttons on a blouse can make the difference of whether an item is classified as luxury or common garment. The interpretation of the tariff codes requires studying the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and developing the skills for merchandise classification for tariff application.
